선인장: Art pop-up store & cafe

When I came back home (Chungju) after a year of working in New York, I faced an obstacle to Covid-19 and inevitably canceled all travel and internship plans. Then I quickly changed gears to find art-related opportunities in Chungju to best utilize my previous experiences as an artist, entrepreneur, and educator and to contribute to the local community.

I sought other inviting and accessible modalities that broke from conventional forms and to combine that search with my interdisciplinary interests in access to art, education, entrepreneurship, and mentorship. Realizing the lack of art-related opportunities for young artists and college students in Chungju, I opened the doors of 선인장 Art Pop-up Store & Café to provide a place for growth and experience for local aspiring artists for three months. 선인장 offers opportunities for young artists to not only exhibit and sell their work but also to hold art classes and to communicate with their audiences. Moreover, on average, for most galleries, sales commission averages about 40%-50%. However, at선인장, 70% of the art sales go to the artist, and 10% is donated to the Chungju Youth Shelter. In the process of curating and directing the exhibition theme of <공간, 공감>, I learned various perspectives on what art means to these young Korean artists.

brooklyn youth chorus (byc) art administration fellowship

As an art administration fellow at the Brooklyn Youth Chorus (BYC), I came to view art administration as another artistic medium. One of my primary tasks at BYC was helping to coordinate community building projects with a focus on the group’s mission of empowering children of diverse backgrounds through their voices. It is incredibly empowering to walk into the office knowing that my work will lead to a priceless smile on a chorister’s face and another opportunity for children to realize how valuable their voices are. My time at BYC also challenged me to learn more purely administrative concerns such as development and finance, matters essential to running any professional endeavor. Most of all, it consolidated my passion for pursuing a career in art administration for non-profit organizations, using all aspects of this experience in my professional life.

SHELTER COMMUNITY MURAL & GARDEN PROJECT

"우리는 다른 사람들에 비해 느릴지도 모릅니다. 그렇지만 쉼터 가족들의 아낌없는 지원을 통해 천천히 저희만의 속도로 배우고 성장하고 준비하고 있습니다. 마치 애벌레가 저 멋진 나비가 되기 위해서 성장해 나가는 것을 표현하고 싶었어요." “We may be slower than others. Through the guidance and support of the Girls Teenager Shelter, we are able to learn, grow, and prepare for the future at our own pace. Each one of us is just like caterpillars transforming into butterflies when we break from within.”

We launched this community mural/garden project to cultivate a place for self-reflection, rest, and new memories for the Shelter Community. I directed and designed the space with the shelter community through mutual conversations.

We intentionally chose butterflies because they symbolize growth and progress. Yellow is here to signify warmth, vitality, creativity, and happiness. Rainbow conveys a message of equality, diversity, and serenity. Through transforming and brightening the abandoned yard, the Shelter community was able to stimulate creativity, a sense of community, and teamwork.

CACTUS ART POP-UP GALLERY & CAFE (@cactus.artpopup)

When I came back home in Feb 2020, I realized the lack of art-related opportunities for young artists and college students in Chungju. Then I contemplated ways to best utilize my previous experiences as an artist, entrepreneur, and educator and to contribute to the local community. This led to opening the doors of 선인장 (Cactus), a pop-up space for10 local young artists in Chungju to exhibit, sell artworks, hold art classes and connect with other artists and visitors. Moreover, on average, for most galleries, art sales commission averages about 40%-50%. However, at the Cactus, 70% of the art sales went to the artist, and 10% was donated to the Chungju Youth Shelter. I directed all aspects of the business from curating, creating social media identity, cooking, and accounting, resulting in $8530 in revenue and $1000 in donations to the Chungju Girls Youth Shelter.

aRT education

A group an art students designed, produced and led curricular innovations that contend with pressing issues facing inner city classrooms through hands-on art and design projects at the bennett elementary school in detroit. working with the 4th graders enlightened me in how to view art making practice again. i tend to be afriad of what my art is going to be seen as. However, the brave six kids I worked with showed that sometimes, you just have to go for it and take risks.

Chico MacMurtrie Border Crosser Installation Project

A team of 16 students from the schools of Art and Design, Engineering, Literature, and Science worked together to create and reconstruct a lightweight and inflatable sculpture designed by world-renowned artist Chico Macmurtire called the ‘Border Crosser.” I contributed to this project by 3D designing a click-on system for the spine of the front link and printing them for the Border Crosser. Being a part of the Border Crosser taught me how to cross the borders that I have created in my life. I still remember the talk I had with Chico in the gallery. I said, “The visual purpose of Border Crosser has definitely opened not only my eyes but our audiences to the issues that are happening concurrently with border patrol. It would be amazing to have our Border Crosser performing at the actual border, but even if it doesn’t, I don’t think it matters. The Border Crosser had me reflect on a different level what a border means to me and whether that border is even a physical concept or a subjective concept that I create myself. Through the experience I had with Chico and the team, I was able to take a step in building the courage to cross the borders that I face.”
