SHELTER COMMUNITY MURAL & GARDEN PROJECT

“We may be slower than others. Through the guidance and support of the Girls Teenager Shelter, we are able to learn, grow, and prepare for the future at our own pace. Each one of us is just like caterpillars transforming into butterflies when we break from within.”

We launched this community mural/garden project to cultivate a place for self-reflection, rest, and new memories for the Shelter Community. I directed and designed the space with the shelter community through mutual conversations.

We intentionally chose butterflies because they symbolize growth and progress. Yellow is here to signify warmth, vitality, creativity, and happiness. Rainbow conveys a message of equality, diversity, and serenity. Through transforming and brightening the abandoned yard, the Shelter community was able to stimulate creativity, a sense of community, and teamwork.

CACTUS ART POP-UP GALLERY & CAFE (@cactus.artpopup)

When I came back home in Feb 2020, I realized the lack of art-related opportunities for young artists and college students in Chungju. Then I contemplated ways to best utilize my previous experiences as an artist, entrepreneur, and educator and to contribute to the local community. This led to opening the doors of 선인장 (Cactus), a pop-up space for10 local young artists in Chungju to exhibit, sell artworks, hold art classes and connect with other artists and visitors. Moreover, on average, for most galleries, art sales commission averages about 40%-50%. However, at the Cactus, 70% of the art sales went to the artist, and 10% was donated to the Chungju Youth Shelter. I directed all aspects of the business from curating, creating social media identity, cooking, and accounting, resulting in $8530 in revenue and $1000 in donations to the Chungju Girls Youth Shelter.
